Learn More About Starrville, Texas
Starrville is a small unincorporated community in southeastern Smith County, Texas. Located about 16 miles east of Tyler, the community primarily serves as a bedroom community for Tyler and the nearby cities of Lindale, Whitehouse and Bullard. The oldest community in Smith County, Starrville was first known as Crossroads, a stop along stagecoach and freight lines.
Settlers first arrived in the area in the late 1840s and the city was officially platted in 1873. In 1881, the community's name was changed to honor O. B. Starr, the first postmaster of the community. Starrville had a train station and post office until they were discontinued in the mid-1940s and 1950s, respectively.
Today, Starrville is home to a small population of less than 200 people. It is mostly known for its historic schoolhouse, now aptly named the Starrville School Museum. It was built in 1888 and is perhaps the oldest existing schoolhouse in Smith County. The museum is dedicated to showcasing the history of Starrville and pays homage to its original one-room schoolhouse which was built by settlers.
Starrville is also home to In-Lon-Schka Park, a recreational park that features camping, picnic sites, and a stocked lake. The lake provides visitors with a place to swim, fish, and kayak.
The surrounding Smith County is an agricultural area, and Starrville is one of its many small farming communities. The city usually has one major event per year - a folk festival which takes place in early June each year. The festival celebrates the culture and history of the city, with vendors selling food, crafts, and antiques.
Although small and somewhat isolated, Starrville has a rich and storied history. It does not have much in the way of amenities, but its residents are proud of their community, its history, and its laid back atmosphere.
