Starrville, Texas is a town in Smith County in east Texas. It is known as the “City of Stars” because it was one of the first cities to use electric lighting in east Texas. It is part of the Tyler, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Starrville originated in the mid-1800s when W. T. Jenkins purchased a piece of land with his wife, Sarah. The Jenkins moved to Starrville from North Carolina and soon built a store and sawmill. The Jenkins ran a post office and the Starrville post office has been in operation ever since. The Jenkins’ store served as a trading post for local farmers.

The population of Starrville has fluctuated over the years. In the twentieth century, it had a high of 900 people in 1890 but decreased to 300 by the mid-1980s. Since then, the population has grown back to 600.

Starrville is an agricultural community with local producers of hay, cotton, tomatoes, wheat, and longhorn cattle. It’s also home to a saw mill, churches, businesses and schools. There are two cemeteries in Starrville and the first school was built in 1888.

The economy of Starrville has seen a few changes since the turn of the 20th century. In the 1930s, the economy was driven by local agriculture, manufacturing, logging, and mining. Today, the economy is mostly driven by healthcare, education, retail and recreation.
