Arp, Texas is an unincorporated community located in Smith County. It was founded in the 1880s, and at the time was known as Finnebutte and Arp Station. By 1910, the name had been changed to Arp in honor of the first postmaster, Moses Arp. During its early days, the majority of the population in the area were farmers and ranchers who relied on the area’s abundant resources. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Arp grew to become a center for manufacturing. Several companies, such as Chrysler, Grand Louver Products, and Owens Corning Fiberglass, set up plants in the area.
The greater Tyler, Texas area has benefited from the economic activity generated by Arp as people moved to the area to take advantage of the jobs available. With a population of 1,502 and an area of 5.2 square miles, Arp is small but has big appeal. People in the area love the small, tight-knit community feeling that the small town provides.
The climate in Arp is typical for east Texas; temperate and mild with warm summers and cool winters.
