Arp, Texas is a small rural town located in Smith County in eastern Texas. It is situated about 90 miles southeast of Dallas and about 30 miles south of Tyler, the county seat. Arp was founded in 1846 and was originally called Laura’s Grove.

Its name was changed to Arp in the 1920s, in honor of the first mayor of the community, James W. Arp. The community thrived off farming for many years, growing cotton and corn, as well as raising cattle and poultry. The nearby Sabine River and its tributaries provided an abundance of natural resources for local residents, who relied heavily on fishing and logging as sources of income.

The town is home to several historically significant structures, including the Arp Methodist Church, which was built in 1849. Two stores, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, and several schools were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the population of the town reached its peak of around 800 people.

Today, Arp’s population is estimated to be just over 1,500 people. The town offers quiet country living with access to larger metropolitan areas. Community members are served by the Arp Independent School District, which serves about 700 students in Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Residents of Arp are active within the local community. The Arp Chamber of Commerce works hard to promote economic stability and responsible growth within the town. It organizes several local events and services, such as the annual Arp Fest, the Arp Community Day Picnic, the Sound of the Sabine Music and Arts Festival, and the Arp Historical Museum.
