Arp, Texas is a small rural town located in Smith County, Texas. It is situated along State Highway 64 and is part of the Tyler Metropolitan Statistical Area.
First settled in 1844, Arp is one of the oldest towns in the state. The community was first named Taylor's Mill, in honor of its founder, William J. Taylor. The name of the town was changed to Arp in 1887, after a nearby post office was named that. As farming was the primary industry in the town, the Arp Cotton Gin was built to process the harvest of cotton grown in the area.
Arp is approximately 4 miles from the town of Winona, and about 15 miles from Tyler. The land around Arp is mostly hilly, but also does feature some plains and prairies. The climate in Arp is humid subtropical, and there is a good amount of rainfall each year.
Arp is home to the Smith County Arena, which is a large indoor and outdoor arena that holds concerts, equestrian and rodeo events, and other entertainment. The town also has its own church, the Arp Church of Christ, which was originally built in 1895 and reconstructed in 1984.
