Whitehouse, Texas is a small city located in Tyler County, lying just east of Tyler. Approximately 9,000 people call Whitehouse their home and benefit from the quaint small town atmosphere that it offers.
The town was founded in 1854, when the Azel H. Gipson family settled in the area. Originally called "White House" by the settlers in honor of the cottonwood trees on the property, two years later the town was renamed Whitehouse as it is known today. Once it was officially founded, retail stores, churches, and other community buildings began popping up.
The first cotton gin and grist mill in the county were built in Whitehouse and this started the area’s agricultural industry. Today, there are several farms and ranches close by and in Whitehouse, and it has been voted Tyler County Farm Family of the Year on five different occasions.
Whitehouse is proud of its strong education system, offering quality education to all its K-12 students. The city is also home to The University of Texas Health Center at Tyler, which is a research and healthcare facility that provides world-class care to East Texas residents.
