Malakoff, TX is a small town located in Henderson County, Texas. With a population of just over 2,500, it is consideredboth a historic and a family-oriented community.
Malakoff is situated atop the southern end of Cedar Creek Reservoir. It was first settled in 1869 and named after the Battle of Malakoff, which took place during the Crimean War. The settlement was an agricultural community, with cotton and corn being the main crops. This area quickly established itself as a timber trading post, because of the abundance of Cedar trees at the time.
The town of Malakoff continued to thrive in the early and mid-1900's, but it was not until 1981 that it incorporated as a city. That same year, the Cedar Creek Dam was completed and helped to create the Cedar Creek reservoir. The reservoir provides many recreational activities including boating, fishing, and swimming.
Malakoff is also known for its annual Old Gospel Singing and Preaching Convention in August. The Convention features an array of gospel musicians, preachers, musicians and quartets from around the country, who perform for the 10-day affair.
The Malakoff Independent School District serves the community, with all campuses accredited by the Texas Education Agency. Malakoff High School is home to the Malakoff, Tigers athletics program. The school takes part in competitions such as Basketball, Football, Track & Field, Cross Country, Golf, Power lifting and Cheerleading.
