Malakoff is a small city located in Henderson County in East Texas. With a population of 2,073 as of the 2019 census, it is the fifth largest city in Henderson County.

The city got its name from a Russian fort during the Crimean War, situated at the mouth of the river. The fort, in turn, was named by the French in honor of a battle in which they took part in the Siege of Sebastopole. As a tribute to this battle, the earliest settlers of what is now Malakoff, Texas, named their settlement Sebastiana. However, when a post office opened in the area in 1883, the name chosen for it was Malakoff.

Malakoff is home to some of the most beautiful natural sights in East Texas. It is situated on Cedar Creek Lake and surrounded by picturesque rolling hills and forests, making it an ideal destination for outdoor activities.

The economy of Malakoff is mainly driven by tourism, with the hotel and hospitality industry being the largest in the town. There is also a small number of businesses, mostly in the food and retail industries.

The creek that runs through Malakoff, Cedar Creek, is home to some of the finest bass fishing in the area. There are numerous access and launch points along the creek. This makes it an excellent spot for recreational fishermen and wildlife photographers.

The city is also home to historical sites, such as the Henderson County Museum, which is full of artifacts and exhibits related to the town’s history. There is also a monument dedicated to the local veterans at the Veterans Museum of East Texas.

Malakoff is also filled with unique cultural attractions. The larger events, such as the Malakoff Annual BBQ Cookoff and the Malakoff Fair and Rodeo, typically draw thousands of visitors each year.
