History

The town of Sulphur Springs was founded in 1836 by Union Major Augustus Evans and his friend John C. Luttrell to serve as a location for shipping goods. The town was named for its proximity to a sulphur spring that was believed to have medicinal properties with the healing waters.

In 1856, Sulphur Springs was incorporated as the first town in Hopkins County and it quickly become the center of commerce in northeast Texas. The town underwent various periods of growth and decline, with many of the local businesses which included turpentine camps, sawmills, cotton gins, and a general store playing an important role in the economic growth of the area.

The only major battle of the Civil War to take place in Hopkins County was the Battle of Sulphur Springs which was fought in April 1864. Following the war, the city embarked on a period of growth and development. The city hosted numerous festivals until the Great Depression in the 1930s caused an economic decline. Since then, the city has continued to experience steady growth and development.
