First settled in the mid-1800s, Wills Point was named for William Wills, who bought approximately 1,800 acres of land in the area. By 1896, the city was officially incorporated and had established a post office and early industries such as the cotton gin, steam mill and lumber yard. Though the town has changed in many ways over the past century, the strong sense of community remains.
Today, Wills Point is home to 3,496 citizens and encompasses 10.5 square miles at the confluence of several creeks. The town is a nature-lover’s paradise, with nearby Lake Tawakoni State Park and Wills Point State Park offering camping, fishing, swimming, and canoeing. There is also an 18-hole golf course, two museums, and many parks and trails.
The historic downtown area is centered around Trinity and Main Streets, where the restored 1890s Wills Point Commercial Historic District features the original city hall and other historic buildings. Other attractions include the Silverleaf Arts Center, Van Zandt Arts and Cultural District, Wills Point I.S.D. Art Galleries, and Lake Tawakoni Bonfire Events held several weekends a year.
