Gilmer is a small town in northeast Texas with a population of just over 5000 people. It is located just off of US Highway 271, a major thoroughfare. It is in close proximity to Longview and Tyler, both of which offer a variety of entertainment and shopping venues.
Though it is small, Gilmer has much to offer. There are many historic houses, buildings and churches in town, as well as two museums. The East Texas Oil and Gas Museum, housed in a renovated 1920’s era building, features displays on the local oil and gas industry that once defined the area. The Caldwell Historical Park, located in the downtown area, encompasses 13 city blocks and tells the story of Gilmer’s past. Here, visitors can see pictures and artifacts from the days of its early settlers.
The area is home to two popular annual festivals. The East Texas Yamboree Festival, held each October, celebrates the area’s culture and heritage, and celebrates the production of yams, a major crop in the area. The Possum Kingdom Trail Ride is another popular event, featuring music, rodeos, and plenty of outdoor activities.
For outdoor adventure, nearby Lake Bob Sandlin State Park offers fishing and swimming, as well as camping and other recreational activities. Boat and jet ski rentals can be found nearby, and there is a large marina that provides boat docks and supplies. Jordan Park, situated on the western part of the lake, has a disc golf course, playground, and picnic areas.
Gilmer also provides its residents with easy access to all the conveniences of large town living. Shopping venues are just a short drive away and there are plenty of dining options, from fast food restaurants to family-style diners. There are also ample opportunities for outdoor recreation, from swimming to hiking trails to hunting areas.
