Located at the junction of U.S. Highway 82 and Texas State Route 37 in northeast Red River County, the small Texas town of Clarksville is an historical treasure that has much to offer it visitors. The first settlement of Clarksville is credited to Jonathan Clark in 1833, but the area wasn't officially organized until 1837 when the Red River County was created. Years later, in 1853, the town was incorporated. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Clarksville's economy was built around the production of peaches, cotton and dairy, earning the small town the title of 'Peach Capital of Texas.' The town is also persistently acclaimed for its Main Street—a four-block promenade, which features turn-of-the-century buildings and picturesque storefronts.

Today, Clarksville boasts a population of around 3,400, which swells to more than 10,000 over the summer when visitors join locals to visit the area's renowned peaches. While the peach industry is still prominent, the town nowadays is most commonly associated with defense and aerospace—home to the United States' only Armed Forces Heartland Recruiting Center, the Texana Aircraft Corporation, and the Nuclear Weapons Assembly and Testing Facility, among others.

There is an abundance of culture and heritage to be found in Clarksville too. Amongst the town's many historic sites are five buildings that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, a few of which include the Crockett and the McCullough Ranch.
