Larue is a small unincorporated community of less than 200 people located in western Henderson County, Texas. Located just 15 miles southeast of Athens, it's very close to the community of Malakoff and just minutes away from some of the recreational opportunities in East Texas.

Founded in 1916, the town was initially home to a few dozen settlers. The settlement was originally called "Johnsons Crossing," but the name changed to Larue in 1925 in honor of a pioneer family who settled in the area.

The locals enjoy hunting, fishing, camping, and other outdoor activities in the many nearby state parks and wildlife management areas. Lake Palestine is a popular destination just 10 miles northwest, and the Cedar Creek Lake State Park is only 20 minutes away. These areas provide locals and visitors with a variety of activities, such as swimming, boating, fishing, hunting, and bird watching.

Larue also has a rich history. This area was once home to the First Methodist Church in Henderson County, which was established in 1886. Several historical markers in the area document this important part of local history.

The town features a cafe and a couple of convenience stores, but there are no hotels or motels in the immediate area. The closest large shopping center is about 15 minutes away in Henderson.

While Larue might be a bit off the beaten path, it's absolutely worth a visit. Its rural atmosphere and close proximity to recreational activities makes it a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city.
